Swords and shovels are unique melee weapons in that they can deflect bullets. Press the special button while an enemy has blue triangles around them to throw your spear at them. While spears can be used as melee weapons, they can also be thrown at enemies. However, they have a limited supply of ammo, so make your shots count. You can pick up these weapons and use them. In many instances, you can find ranged weapons in the environment, either lying around or dropped by enemies.

These can be used to take out enemies from a distance. Some characters are equipped with ranged weapons such as guns and bazookas. If you press the attack button at the same time that an enemy is going to attack you, some characters will perform a special move that either instantly defeats them (such as Indy or the Enemy Boxer) or stuns them temporarily (such as Short Round or Mola Ram). Melee attacks come in three-hit combos, with each punch or kick doing one hit of damage. Pretty much all characters in the game have melee attacks, requiring you to get up close and personal with your attackers. Your partner can actually be helpful in combat, as they can stun enemies for you. Combat in this game is relatively simple, but I figured I'd share some interesting things here. Indy has many enemies, and you'll be fighting lots of them as you play through the levels.
